“The star attraction at Alta Luna, in the figurative arena, is Judy Araujo Volkmann, who is best recognized for her large-in-scale, highly expressive and colorful portraits of women’s faces, as exemplified by “Passerby.” Volkmann’s portraits are full of movement and energy, with wild trailing brush lines. Her intention is to depict imaginative appearances of physical characteristics with the hope that they reveal hidden psychological aspects. To do this she purposefully sets her figures in what she calls “voids,” where time and place is negated to create ambiguous atmosphere. The super up-close, in-your-face arrangements can’t be ignored and immediately grab viewer attention.”
